* First sandwich plastic bag introduced in 1957, department stores started broader bag use in the late 1970's and supermarkets by the 1980's (Seattle Post Intelligencer)

* Only 0.6% of all plastic bags are recycled thus leading to massive environmental issues (Worldwatch Institute 2004 report).

* Plastic bags are typically made from fossil fuels and the production process involves a heavy industrial process with byproducts such as heavy metals, chlorofluorocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, sulfur oxides and dust (Chemtec Publishing).

* Approximately 60 - 100m barrels of oil are used each year to make plastic bags (Natural Environment).

* US plastics industry and related industries employs around 2.2m workers and contributes over $400m annually to the economy (Society of Plastics Industry).
